The Last Season

Jake Reynolds had spent most of his life believing that baseball was more than just a game. It was where he found confidence, built lifelong friendships, and shaped the person he wanted to become. Every early morning practice, tiring lifting sessions, and long road trips brought him one step closer to the dream he’d had since he was a kid, and that dream was to go semi professional after college. By the time he reached college, that dream finally felt real and it was the first step to the next level. All it took was one game, and it was all gone.

A serious injury during his senior season ended the career that Jake had worked toward for so many years. Graduation came and went, and instead of feeling excited about what was next, he felt lost. Without baseball, he wasn’t sure who he was supposed to be anymore. For a long time, he avoided everything that reminded him of the game he loved.

Until an invitation arrived.

The university’s annual alumni game was only a few weeks away. Jake looked down at the message on his phone, unsure of how to feel. Part of him wondered if going back to the field would finally give him the closure he had been looking for, while another part worried it would bring back memories he had spent years trying to move on from. He still couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe one more game was exactly what he needed.

Looking Through the Past

Before making his decision, Jake found himself revisiting the moments that had shaped his journey. The highs, the disappointments, and everything in between reminded him how quickly life can change.

Looking through some of those memories, Jake realized that baseball had given him more than wins and losses. It had taught him discipline, resilience, and the importance of showing up even when things didn’t go according to plan. For the first time in years, he stopped focusing on how his story ended and started appreciating everything the game had given him.

The Walk Back

Returning to campus felt weird, the buildings looked the same, the field looked the same, but jake had changed. He walked through familiar hallways and past the locker room doors, memories returned in ways that he never expected.

The sound of footsteps with cleats on echoed through the hallway. The sounds of a locker room, the sound of a bat hitting the ball, the fans cheering. Jake realized that what he missed most wasn’t the attention or the possibility of playing professionally. He actually missed the people, he missed being apart of a team, and he missed the feeling of belonging.

One More Chance

As alumni weekend approached, former teammates began making plans to return. Old group chats were getting spammed, and stories from their college days resurfaced. What seemed like a closed chapter was now begining to open. Jake was coming back.

The game wasn’t about proving that he still had what it took, there was actually zero pressure. There were no scouts watching from the stands. No championship waiting at the end. This time, baseball wasn’t asking Jake to keep chasing the dream he’d had since he was a kid. Instead, it gave him the chance to look back and appreciate how much the game had already shaped his life and to accept that what happened happened and there was no going back.

The Story He Never Expected

The night before the alumni game, Jake couldn’t stop thinking about everything that had brought him to this moment. The early morning practices. The pressure to succeed. The career ending injury. The disappointment. All the years he spent trying to convince himself that moving on meant forgetting.

Looking back, Jake finally understood something he had never allowed himself to believe-His story didn’t actually end when baseball did. The game had shaped the person he became, but it was never the only chapter of his life.Dreams don’t always disappear and sometimes, they just change into something unexpected.

More Than the Scoreboard

When alumni game day finally arrived, Jake stepped onto the field with a nervous smile. He laughed with his former teammates, he shared stories from the past, he watched younger players warm up with the same passion he once had.For the first time since his injury, baseball brought him joy again and not because it gave him another chance to relive the past, but because it reminded him why he loved the game in the first place. Later that evening, Jake thought about the athletes, teams, and stories that had inspired him throughout his life. The moments he admired most had never been about perfection, they were about perseverance, teamwork, and growth.

As he reflected on those memories, Jake realized that success isn’t always measured by stats, awards, or reaching the destination you originally planned for yourself.Sometimes success means adapting, starting over, and sometimes it means using your experience to help someone else find their way. As the sun was setting on their field,Jake looked around one last time before heading home.

His life hadn’t turned out exactly as he imagined it would, and he never became the player he thought he would become. But standing there, surrounded by teammates and memories, he finally understood that not getting the ending you expected doesn’t mean the story wasn’t worth telling and some endings aren’t failures. He was able to find a new purpose, and that was coaching little kids, passing on his passion, and being able to stay connected with the game he loves.

Final Weekly Summary

DS106 completley changed the way I think about storytelling. Before this class, I mostly connected storytelling with writing, and throughout the semester, I learned that images, sound, design, and video can all communicate ideas and emotions in ways that words alone can’t. Each project challenged me to think creatively and consider how different forms of media influence the way an audience actually experiences a story.

If I could take this class again, I would maybe spend more time experimenting and taking creative risks instead of worrying so much about making everything perfect. Some of my favorite projects ended up being the ones where I stepped outside of my comfort zone and tried something new, like the introduction to the video unit and creating a “day in my life” story about being a procrastinator, which I definitely relate to. I enjoyed being able to capture those experiences on video and turn my own perspective into something others possibly could connect with.

The most exciting part of the semester for me was working with video because it gave me the chance to bring different types of media together in one project. Creating this final story allowed me to apply everything I learned throughout DS106 and showed me how effective multimedia storytelling can be. Overall, this course pushed me to be more creative, and willing to try new things, and those are skills I know I’ll continue to use long after the class is over.

Here is my rough draft of the final assignemt:
